I made an Elizabethan Glove very badly in 2003. It was made from knitted wire (so the hand could be moulded and shaped) and I have wanted to make a new and improved version ever since as I like the concept of the glove being able to communicate different messages.

With our news being overwhelmed with the plastics in our oceans and current environmental issues, I thought the perfect glove would be for a mermaid.

Made with Stitched wire, hand dyed then knitted into a glove. The embellishments are all 3D stitched thread inspired by the ocean. The wire glove allows any hand gesture the mermaid wishes to communicate. Right now, it’s likely a thumbs down or a F**k you about what we as humans are doing to our environment. I hope in the not too distant future it can be come a thumbs up or a high five for what good work we are doing to protect our planet and oceans. The lining of the gusset is embroidered with the words; reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle

On a side note, I searched my local beaches (Sunshine Coast, BC) for waste and plastics I could embroider onto the glove, but after many months, the only non beach item I found was a pair of headphones left behind. The headphone wire was shredded and is stitched into the glove gusset.
